First of all, it is better to eat fresh fruits and vegetables than not eat them even if they are not organic. In other words, choose organic when you can, but the goal is fresh whole foods!!
That said, there are certain fresh fruits and vegetables that I always buy organic.
- lettuce
- kale
- spinach
- celery
- sprouts
- broccoli
- cauliflower
- apples
- blueberries
- potatoes
- onions
- garlic
- ginger
- strawberries
Remember these are big cancer fighters, and our goal is to beat cancer!! Ok, what are my tips?
1. Price
- I have found several sources for good prices on organic foods. Depending on where you live, there are some stores that might surprise you with good prices on organics.
Grocery Outlet Stores: They have a very large selection of organic foods in my area. Very good prices! As an example, they sell bags of organic apples, bananas, onions, spinach, yams, and much other fresh produce – all at very reasonable prices. A good place to stock up!
Walmart: Surprise! Very fresh, very good prices, and I have read some reputable watchdog reviews that say Walmart vets all of their organic sources. I have noticed that they are carrying more and more organic foods all the time. I almost always find reasonably priced broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cucumbers, mushrooms, etc. All very fresh!
Fred Meyer Stores have a very good fresh organic produce section. Watch for sales. the other day I found big, beautiful bunches of broccolini – 2 for $3.00! Pretty hard to beat.
Our local co-op is an amazing source for fresh organics. I am careful to check prices and watch for deals, but by shopping these 3 or 4 stores I am able to find all the organic produce I can eat at really very good prices!
2. Taste
2. Quite honestly, fresh organic produces tastes better!
One store I shop has their organic bananas right next to the non-organic bananas for exactly the same price. Time and again I have seen people reach for the non-organic!
I encourage you to do a taste test with organic vs. non-organic bananas. I really believe you will be delighted with the sweet and tasty organic bananas compared to their non-organic counterparts!
3. Availability
3. When I can’t find organic, I wash things well and I don’t worry about it, knowing I am healthier eating as many fresh fruits and vegetables as I can!
Remember the goal is to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, so choose organic when you can, and when you can’t, wash them well, and enjoy, knowing you are filling your body with fresh, healthy nutrients!
